From the late 70s right through to the early 90s, the arcade was the home of video gaming. But moreover, these halls of noise and flashing lights were where a place to hang out with friends - chill out, have a soft drink and, for a nominal price, test your skill on the latest, trendiest game with a place on the high score table as the prize at stake.
Limited by the technology of the time, these arcade games were unlike many modern games, not just in the way they looked and sounded, but also they way they played: with only basic 2D graphics in limited colour and simple chip-generated sound effects, gameplay was the key - a game had to be immediately playable with little to no instruction, fast, furious and keeping the player coming back to have one more try, or to beat that high score their friend had just posted. For a young video gamer, this was a very special time to be growing up.
Sadly these arcades are now gone, swept aside by relentless advances in home computer and console power. But to those growing up at the time, they were magical places providing not just sociability and gaming, but also inspiration. As a tribute to this time, and the video arcades that inspired us, Leda Entertainment have created their Arcade Collection - games that attempt to capture the feel of that period, that you can just pick up and get into. And while we can't offer the sociability of the actual video arcade itself, our world-wide high-score tables mean that you can still go after that top high score.
